The challenge

Diamaguène Sicap Mbao is home to 174,000 people on 7.3 km², right next to the Mbao free industrial zone, the refinery and the industrial corridor along Hann Bay. No station measures the air there, while fine particle (PM2.5) levels far exceed WHO guidelines.

What we do

We are deploying a fine-particle monitoring network, with AirGradient sensors and a near-reference unit, on schools, health posts and municipal buildings. PM2.5 data is published as open data at least once a month, building a local body of evidence to support the revision of the national standard NS 05-062.

The project was launched on 9 September 2026 at the town hall, chaired by the mayor, Cheikh Aliou Beye. It is funded by the EPIC Air Quality Fund.

Partners

LPAO-SF laboratory (UCAD/ESP), CAJUST, Diamaguène Sicap Mbao town hall, Mbao health district, DIREC (Ministry of the Environment).
