Air quality in Greater Lomé
Greater Lomé is home to 27% of Togo’s population and over 90% of its economic activity, with no permanent air monitoring network. With ANGE, we are deploying 15 monitors to produce open data on fine particles and support new environmental decrees.

The challenge
Greater Lomé is home to 27% of Togo’s population and over 90% of its economic activity, on less than 1% of its land. The port, industrial zones and traffic expose residents to fine particles (PM2.5), yet the country does not have a permanent air quality monitoring network.
What we do
With the National Environment Management Agency (ANGE), as part of the Togo Air Quality Project (PQAT), we are setting up the country’s first permanent air quality monitoring network. It has 12 AirGradient sensors and 3 near-reference monitors, placed near the port, in industrial zones, along main roads and in residential areas. PM2.5 data is published as open data on OpenAQ. It is used to document pollution, inform public decisions and check compliance with national standards.
kaikai brings its IoT and data expertise: site selection, sensor deployment and calibration, and data integration and analysis.
A working group will draft implementing decrees for the environmental law, covering air monitoring, pollution prevention and the polluter-pays principle. They will be submitted to the Ministry of the Environment. The project started in September 2026 and is funded by the EPIC Air Quality Fund.
